Bicycle

Bicycling is one of the most popular ways to get around on the island of Key West. Most residents don’t own an automobile. There are numerous bicycle rental companies throughout Key West. You can even have them delivered to your hotel.

A Segway

A Segway scooter is quickly becoming the primary mode of transportation in Key West. You can rent a Segway, usually one a lot like the Segway XT, for several hours or you may opt to take a guided Segway tour. If your choice is to rent one, you will usually have to complete some training – about 15-20 minutes, before they allow you to leave. It usually isn’t cheap to rent a Segway, but the fun you will have makes it all worth it!

Scooters

You might want to get around the island by renting a scooter. By doing this, you can get a tan at the same time you are exploring. A Scooter is so simple to ride and there is probably a 5 minute learning curve.

Bone Island Shuttles

Another great way to explore Key West. The comfortable air-conditioned shuttle makes a loop around the island until 11:00PM. It makes several stops at the major hotels and tourist attractions.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available throughout the island. You can either call to arrange pick up or hail one if you are in the historic area.

Walking

Key West is small, at only 2 miles x 4 miles. If you stay in the historic district, it is easy to get around on foot. Pick up a copy of Sharon Wells Walking Guide and enjoy a leisurely stroll while learning about the island.

Old Town Trolley

The Old Town Trolley offers narrated tours of Key West. The trolley makes designated stops and allows you to do some sight seeing along the way. You then re-board and continue the tour at your leisure. These tours are a great way to see the town and learn some Key West history.

An Electric Car

In regular terms, these are street legal golf carts. You can rent 2, 4 or 6 seaters. There are even custom carts that look like 57 Chevys, Hummers, roadsters and more. Most of the electric car rental companies will offer free pick up and drop you back off at your hotel.

By Car

While it isn’t the best way to get around in Key West, parking is available in the historic district either on the street or in parking lots/garages. Street parking close to Duval Street is metered so youll need change. You may find non-metered parking in other areas. Whereever you park, be very sure it does not say residential parking or you will most likely get a parking ticket.

Key West is a very small island and the streets are usually very crowded with tourists, so the best bet will always be to find the easiest and most compact form of transportation if you plan to head out and explore the island.
